Excerpt from a Yolo, California newspaper article dated March 30, 1899 about William Hatcher and Sarah Frances' 50th wedding anniversary.

"Monday morning March 27, 1899 was the golden wedding anniversary of William and "Fanny" Hatcher. They went about their work as usual, she with the household affairs, Mr. Hatcher, hale and hearty, hitched up a team and engaged in farming operations. Late in the morning they were surprised by friends and neighbors who assembled to do them honor and appropriately celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. There was a steady stream of old settlers and neighbors arriving through the forenoon. As if by magic long tables appeared under the walnut trees, and these were soon loaded with good things to eat. Before the food was served, the presents were displayed and most important of these was a set of furniture for their home."

"When the dinner hour was announced, 60 persons more than 50 years of age sat down at the first tables. There were prayers and speeches and Mr. Hatcher sang one of his songs for which he was famous as his thank you."

After the feast, the company scattered for conversation. The old newspaper describes the afternoon in this way:

"It was a pretty picture. The gardens and the fields are awakening from their winter trance to smile in the beauty of the spring. The leaves are unrolling their satin smoothness in an endless variety of delicate colorings and happy greetings and God Speeds, and laughter and good will fill the air with joyous sounds."

"One of the tributes paid to Mrs. Hatcher was: 'No child of want ever came to her door and went empty-handed. No one in sorrow came to her but was comforted, and no one asked her the way to be saved but she pointed him to the cross.'"

"During the afternoon, someone brought out the old spinning wheel on which Mrs. Hatcher had once made blankets and other household articles and she entertained her visitors by showing them how it worked."
