Served in the War of 1812 and was wounded at Horseshoe Bend, Kentucky. He was a Virginian by birth, but after the close of the war he went to Tennessee with a colony of 40 families that settled on a reservation in what is now Sevier County, Tennessee. He later moved to Linn County, Missouri where he spent his remaining years.
