BERLIN MAN DIES WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF BEING A CENTENARIAN
AGED ALMOST 100, BERLIN'S OLDEST CITIZEN PASSES AWAY
Jacob J. Ross, Berlin's oldest citizen, died at his home at East End, last Sunday morning from a complication of diseases, aged 99 years, 9 months, and 3 days. Deceased was born in Stoneycreek township on February 14, 1818, and had he lived until February next would have reached the century mark. He was remarkable preserved for one of his age, and until last week or two was to be seen walking about town and doing odd jobs at his home. He was quite a conversationalist and took great pleasure in relating incidents of earlier days. He was of older order of people who laid much stress on"pow-wow" cure for certain ailments and was often called upon for that purpose. It has only been a few weeks ago that he walked from his home at East End to the Record Office to pay his subscription, and at that time he looked as if he might live for a number of years. He recently sold his little home on North Street and later bought another place at East End, not being satisfied to live with his children, expressing the idea that he and his wife wanted to live in their own home.
Deceased was married to Amanda J. Kitner of Berlin on October 3, 1858 to which union were born eleven children. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Jacob W. Ross, North Street; Mrs. Chauncey Wechtenheiser of Listie; Robert W. Ross, East Main Street; Mrs. John Baer, Meyersdale; and George W. Ross, of this place. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
After burial of the remains at the Odd Fellows cemetery, Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F. B. Trout in the Brethren Church.

Research Notes:
There is a great deal of discrepancy in Jacob's date of birth. Censusrecords show many different ages. 1870 Census lists Jacob L. Ross being 39 (1831) and his wife as 29 (1841). 1880 census shows Jacob and Amanda living in Brothersvalley. He islisted as being 49 and she is 41. Death Certificate shows birth date as Feb. 24, 1824. Obituary as follows shows his birth year as being 1818. 1034
