Headline: Duppstadt Is Engineering Helicopters

A former Somerset farm boy, Robert B. (sic Jay Robert) Duppstadt, is engineering helicopters for the Bell Aircraft Corp., Fort Worth, Tex.

A project engineer on a new series of helicopters, Model 47, Mr. Duppstadt is the son of Mrs. Clarence W. Duppstadt, 121 Fuller street (Somerset, PA), and has two aunts, Miss Elsie Duppstadt and Mrs. E.W. Cleeves, also residing in Somerset.

He and his wife, Mary Ann, and 8-year-old son James and 4-year-old daughter Ann, live in Arlington, Tex.

When he was 10 years old, his father's farm was converted into Rhodes Field, the airport named for Eugene Rhodes, cousin of his mother, for a famed flier who was one of the first Americans to cross the Atlantic ocean.

Mr. Duppstadt spent most of his spare time as a farm boy hanging around Rhodes Field and the influence of that association resulted in his choosing the aircraft engineering professions.

Subtitle: Went to Penn State

He studied mechanical engineering at Penn State, graduating there in 1942. At that time he joined Curtiss Wright airplane division in Buffalo, NY, where he worked as a stress analysist (sic), on C-46 cargo transports. In 1946 he became project engineer for United Services for Air and was assigned the job modifying the military C-46 and preparing that famous CAA certification.

In 1947 Duppstadt joined Bell Aircraft to work on the early Model 42 helicopted (sic). He was a designer in the transmission group and in 1949 was named CAA coordinator. After two years on that he became CAA designated engineering representative, a capacity in which he still serves.
