Benjamin served in the Confederate army during the Civil War.

Benjamin was teaching in the Indian Nation when he met Dora M. Thomas whose father was a horse trader. To teach in the Indian Nation, Benjamin was required to post a $1000 bond. Benjamin and Dora were married by Rev. Leonard. Both taught in the Choctaw Indian Nation of Oklahoma. They also had a general store. After Benjamin and Dora’s deaths, Benjamin’s brother Andrew Jackson Heard brought their four surviving children to Arkansas and reared them near Lono.
