OBITUARY - Brigadier General Everett A. (Mac) McDonald
Brigadier General Everett A. (Mac) McDonald, USAF retired, passed away April 26, 1984.
He was one of the pioneers in the early use of instruments for all-weather flying, and was a qualified pilot in all multi-engine military aircraft for the past 45 years.
Gen. McDonald was born in Davenport, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa. He graduated summa cum laude in Business Administration from the University of Texas. He was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a graduate of many military service schools, including the Air War College. He was a professor at the Air Command and Staff School for three years. He trained hundreds of bomber pilots during the early part of World War II, and was commander of a B-29 squadron at the end of the war in the Pacific. He served in the early occupation forces in Japan and commanded an Air-Sea Rescue Squadron. He later served as Chief of Tactical Operations at Fifth Air Force Headquarters. He flew briefly for Braniff Air Lines right after WWII.
During the Cuban crisis and early in the Vietnam conflict, he was Chief of the Control Division, Strategic Air Command, where he monitored all strategic forces world-wide. Later, he commanded the 822nd Air Division. Before retiring, he was serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon as Director of Special State-Defense Study Group for the Secretary of Defense. Among Gen. McDonald's awards and decorations were the Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. After retirement, he returned to Austin and served with the Texas Department of Health as an administrator and pilot. He was a life member of the Order of the Daedalians and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the University Presbyterian Church, the Texas Public Employees Association, and the Austin Country Club. He also held a Real Estate license and was involved in the ranching business in West Texas.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret (Bobbi) Farrar; his son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. William F. and Major Susan L. McDonald of Washington, D.C.; his daughter and son-in-law, Jetty Ann and Lt. Col. Steven F. Tomhave of Abilene, two grandchildren, Joy and Scott Tomhave; his mother, Mrs. Orma McDonald of Iowa City, Iowa; two brothers, Frank of Memphis, Tennessee and Ray of New Carrollton, Maryland; his sister, Dorothy Shank of Iowa City, Iowa; his aunt, Dorothy Phillips of Lake Park, Florida; and his mother-in-law, Jetta Farrar of Austin; plus several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Weed-Corley Funeral Home on Monday at 11:00 AM with the Reverand Tom Farmer officiating. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston at 2:45 PM with Col. F. Newton Millen officiating.
