According to family folklore, Martha tried suicide by jumping in rain barrel but was rescued; took to her bed, refused to eat. She lingered for 41 or 42 days, drinking only water, and died. Another version is that Martha took an overdose of medicine which caused her death, and that many years later, Martha's daughter, Alice, did the same thing. 1764
