From his daughter's book, "Salado, Texas, It's History and People": "Papa's brother, John [Wesley Davis], and his wife Annie, had recently moved to Texas and wrote back such glowing reports of the new country that young James decided to join him. He came to Texas alone in 1873, helped his brother John in his photography shop in Salado the first year and then started a grocery store of his own. Two years later he returned to Alabama and brought Mamma back as his bride to Salado." They were married on the same day as his younger brother Robert married Margaret Eugenia Stephens. 1764
