Golie had extremely high fever at age 5 which left her severely retarded. Nancy Carylon Ray Davis, her stepmother, took care of Golie until Nancy's death. "She was a dear and caring mother to Golie." After Nancy's death, Alice Davis Warren cared for her the rest of her life. ¹⁷⁶⁴
