OBITUARY - George S. Sebestyen
George S. Sebestyen, 78, a former business agent for a Teamster’s Union, died April 8, 1985 at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Mr. Sebestyen, a resident of north Phoenix, was born in New York City and moved to Arizona 55 years ago from Redwood Calif.
He was business agent for Teamster’s Union Local #274 from 1939 to 1959, when he moved to California to become official chairman of the dairy department of the Western Conference of Teamster’s in Burlingame, Calif., for 17 years.
He returned to Arizona. He was a life member of BPOE Elks Lodge #355, founded Los Olivas Senior Center, was a member of President Reagan’s re-election committee, served on the Governor Advisory Council, Mayor’s Council on Aging, and Board of directors of the Area Agency for Aging.
In 1979, when he was 72, he was dubbed Minute Man of the Elderly because he was outspoken on matters affecting the elderly. He was honored by the Senior Action Forum, a local affiliate of the National Council of Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife, Helen E.; sons George H. and William J.; daughters Sophia Mitchell, Mary Ann Keller and Patty Stevenson; one brother, Carl; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2312 E. Campbell Ave. Donations may be made to the Heart Association, 1445 E. Thomas, Phoenix.
