Thomas Truitt Sr. ¹⁶²¹

  General Notes:

Thomas Truitt, son of Anderson, was born in 1794, and remained on Crooked Creek when his father went to Cincinnati, and there married Lydia Williams in 1813. In 1829 he moved to the Kiskiminetas, some five miles below Saltsburg, and from there in 1834 to Freeport. Thence he moved to the old homestead in what was then Red Bank (now Madison) township, about 1835, locating on the farm now owned and occupied by Miles W. Hetrick. With the aid of his sons he cleared and improved a part of this tract, and here his death occurred. Of the family of eight children born to himself and wife, Anderson married Sarah Caldwell and had nine children: Elizabeth (Betsy) married George L. Hetrick and had eight children; George W. ; Thomas married Margaret Bish, but had no children; David J. married Betsey Courson and had ten children; Mary M. (Polly) married Michael Buzzard and had seven children; James A. married Sarah Meredith and had six children; William W. married Hannah Kelley and had eight children. Mrs. Polly Buzzard, the only survivor of this family, now in her ninetieth year, lives at Chicago.

THOMAS TRUITT, from whom sprang the Truitt family of Madison township, was born in New Jersey, in 1789 and came to this county about 1800 with his father, Parker Truitt. The latter did not long remain here, moving to the State of Indiana. Thomas Truitt was in the war of 1812, and returning from his tour of duty in 1813, married Lydia, daughter of Thomas Williams, who was an early settler of Madison township. She was born in 1794. After his marriage, Mr. Truitt worked upon leased land until about 1832 when he bought the farm in the northern part of the township, on which one of his sons now lives. He remained there until his death, which occurred in 1854. His wife died in 1866. Their children were: Anderson (deceased), Elizabeth (Hetrick), G. W., Thomas and D. J., all residents of Madison township, Mary (Buzzard), who lives in Ohio, J. A., a farmer of Mahoning township, and William, who lives in Clarion county.

  Life Events:

1. Military: War of 1812 (Private). ¹⁶³⁰ In 1855 at the age of 61 Thomas Truitt petitioned the State of Pennsylvania for the land bounty due him for his service in the War of 1812. The petition says he was a Private in the Company commanded by Captain James Alexander in the Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Colonel Snyder. He volunteered for service at Kittanning on or about 9/10/1812 for the term of 6 months. He was honorably discharged near Black Rock, New York, on or about 12/15/1812.
