OBITUARY
John Burwell was born 6 August 1872 in Linn County, Missouri. He married Matilda Jane Dell and lived near Moberly and then moved to Browning, Missouri. They had no children. He was an entrepeneur and died quite wealthy. In 1949 his nephew, John W. Burwell I visited him after driving a 1940 Chevy with his children, Virginia, David and wife Ruth, who was pregnant with Bill, from St. Petersburg, Florida. It was in April and there was snow on the ground. John was a big man. He acquired his wealth by the sale of about 1300 acres of land that he sold to the railroad for the coal that lay beneath it. He bought and sold most anything which would give him a profit. He owned jointly with Jesse D., John W.'s father, a tract of land in Idaho which when it was sold, he owned outright. He had wonderful sense of humor. He died May 22 and is buried in Locust Valley Cemetery, Sullivan County, Missouri.
