Willis and Livy were divorced when there children were young. Livy and the children left the area. Willis seldom saw his sons again. In 1932 he attended a religious (seminary) college in Los Angeles, California. He graduated valedictorian in a class of 1400 students. A year later he was appointed Dean. He was a school teacher and an insurance agent. He was hired to teach algebra. Not being certified to teach this subject, he kept a lesson ahead of this students. He also was the evangelist Amy McPherson's first lieutinant. He was her right hand man. Willis was a religious zealot.
In 1944 his nephew, Jesse D. Burwell, received a call from California, where Jesse's name was found among Willis' papers after this death. He had died alone in his room. Jesse made arrangements and paid for his body to be sent home and buried east of Browning in Jenkins Cemetery, Linn County, Missouri.
