bullet  General Notes:

Lucille graduated from Eaton Hish School, Eaton, Indiana in 1916. The Fishers lived on farms around Eaton, Indiana until Chester's death. Lucille never remarried and lived with her children in Eaton, Indiana. She supported her two children during the great depression by serving as a cook for the Eaton High School Cafeteria and for the Ball State University Cafeteria. She then worked for many years for Kuhner (later Marhofer) Packing Co. in Muncie, Indiana.

She graduated from Eaton High School with the class of 1916. Very few young people, especially young woman, in those days graduated from high school, so her graduation was a significant achievement.

After Chester's death in 1926, when she was only 28 yrs. old, her son, Keith, 8 yrs. old, and daughter Betty 3 yrs. old, she moved to Eaton, Indiana, where she found employment as the only cook in the newly-organized Eaton School cafeteria. Her wages amounted to $15 per week; however, the goodly supply of left-over food from the cafeteria most days was a boon to our family for evening meals during the Great Depression. The food was good, too - after all it's was our mother's cooking.

Amelia never remarried and was a devoted mother to her children. She was a loving mother, but a strong disciplinarian and didn't hesitate to paddle or "swat"; her children if they deserved such. She was also a loving and attentive grandmother. Her grandchildren adored her, remembering the welcome gifts on their birthdays and at Christmas. Her Thanksgiving dinners, homemade noodles included, remain among her grandchildren's fondest memories.

When her wages were reduced to $12 per week in order that another cook could be employed at the school cafeteria during the depression, she left the job at the cafeteria and worked for a time at a glass factory in Dunkirk, IN. Later, when her son, Keith enrolled in Ball State Teachers College in 1935, she took a job as cook in the Ball State Cafeteria in Muncie, Indiana. Her Aunt Mary Studebaker Walburn was working at the college cafeteria as a cook at that time and probably assisted her in getting this job. At the same time she and her two children moved to Muncie and lived for about 1 year on Kilgore Avenue., and later moved to a house on Dill Street, nearer the College. Lucille later left her position at the college cafeteria and took a job with Kuhner Packing Co., Muncie, Indiana. She remained with with Kuhner, which later became Marhofer Packing, until she retired in 1964.

After she retired, she became afflicted with a form of leukemia, known as lymphocytosis. She made many trips to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio for treatments. She battled long and hard against this affliction and apparently had it "licked" when she become afflicted with another form of cancer on her face. She died in Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana, on January 2, 1972. Her daughter, Betty, was living with her during her last illness. 560
